About the game

A game of chess, which needs no introduction. Set up the pieces, make the first move and try to checkmate your opponent.

Chess needs no introduction: two sides, sixteen pieces each and one goal, checkmating the opposing king. Every piece has its own way of moving, and games are won by planning, not speed. This version runs in your browser, so a short break is enough for a quick game.

Chess belongs to the Board games variant in the Table games world and joined the catalogue on August 25, 2016. The rules, levels and on-screen language are set by the game’s creator, and a short guide appears on its start screen.

How to play

  1. A pawn moves forward one square, two from its starting square, and captures diagonally.
  2. The bishop moves diagonally, the rook along ranks and files, the queen in every direction and the knight in an L shape.
  3. The king moves one square in any direction and may never stay in check.
  4. Checkmate is a position where the king is attacked with no escape: the game ends there.

Three tips for a better game of chess

  • In the opening, claim the centre with pawns and develop knights and bishops quickly.
  • Castle to tuck your king away before you go on the attack.
  • Before every move, ask what your opponent threatens, and only then what you want.
